1-2-1 with Matthew Newbery
This week is Matthew Newbery’s turn to shine - we absolutely loved chatting to him!
Who are you?
I am Matt Newbery, a freelance stylist and main hairstylist of Nails on Demand.
I started my career 6 years ago as Paul Falltricks assistant, assisting him on photo shoots, educational courses and catwalk shows.
I then went on to complete my training at Selfridges CobellaAC where I helped with the Selfridges’ show during London Fashion Week. I now work for myself and alongside Nail Technician to the stars, Jamie Nunn, styling the locks of various Celebrities and TV personalities in and around London town.
Which hairstyle gives you the most buzz to create?
I love men's creative cutting at the moment, but what I enjoy creating changes with what is out there and I push myself to stay current and on trend with whatever and whomever I am providing a service for.
Short 'Sassoon' inspired strong and edgy crops are a favourite, but I get just as much satisfaction from working on long beautiful hair.
Do you have any memorable moment / client or event?
Meeting Patrick Cameron and helping him remove pins from one of his incredible creations was one of my earliest and fondest memories in the industry. He was such a lovely genuine guy and a genius at his craft - a total inspiration!
What’s your top tip for a Summer 2012 hair?
There are too many to mention so my top 3 tips are:
- Soft waves worn smooth and vintage or messed up and disheveled can work a multitude of looks for any occasion.
- Chalking is a great way to add flashes of vibrant temporary colours that you won't become a slave to.
- Up dos - something we've been doing for centuries - messy, classic, clean, whatever the occasion, there's an up do for, either dressed by your stylist or thrown up yourself!
What’s your favourite Cloud Nine tool?
The Wand is a valuable addition to anyone's kit bag! With its multi sized barrel and three heat settings, it can help create any kind of movement in the hair, from Hollywood waves to beach locks and corkscrew curls. This tool is something I just couldn't be without. I use it in every aspect of hairdressing.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Favourite stylists of mine always provide great inspiration. From Guido Palau to Vidal Sassoon, I find I draw my inspiration from my client, what they like and dislike, their style, and what it is they have come to me for.
I also like to take inspiration from different eras, from Victorian to the 20th century and put my own spin on them.
Who are some of your celebrity clients?
I style actress Leah Hackett, actress and star of ‘Great Expectations’ Vanessa Kirby and British actor and face of Burberry, Douglas Booth.
I also style some girls of the cast from Hollyoaks, Binky Fesltead from Made in Chelsea and Jessica Wright from TOWIE.
What’s your best kept secret or favourite product?
It has to go without saying that Cloud Nine isn't my best kept secret! But it certainly is my favourite product! I have lots of favourite products, but one of the products I love the most at the moment is the Cloud Nine Amplify Spray, it allows me to achieve incredible volume when used alongside the tools.
Which celeb would you love to style and why?
This one is easy. I would have loved to have worked on the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor, she worked so many looks personally and artistically as an actress, and continues to be an inspiration today.
