1-2-1 with Matthew Roskell

Matthew Roskell is on the Cloud Nine spotlight this week. Read on to find out all about this handsome and talented stylist!

Who are you?

My name is Matthew Roskell and I have been hairdressing for five years. I am the creative director at Francesco Group Weeping Cross. I have always loved the beauty industry and saw hairdressing as a great pathway to explore my passion. I relish transforming my clients looks in salon, and thrive on pushing myself, outside of the salon, through industry competitions which paid dividence in 2012 when I was shortlisted for Midlands Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards. My collection of images, named Graphite, featured many images created using the Cloud Nine products.

Which hairstyle gives you the most buzz to create?

I do enjoy the variety that my job brings, however over the past couple of years I have really focused on the dressing and styling of hair. Fashion has moved away from the poker straight looks of the late 90,s and early noughties, and I adore creating glamorous, sexy and feminine hair Is my idea of hair heaven.

Do you have any memorable moment / client or event?

My first industry competition was in my first year of hairdressing, the Clothes Show Young Hairdresser, I made it through to the final six on the day and the mixture of nerves and adrenalin of working live on stage was incredible. More recently my first ever British Hairdressing Awards was amazing, to be in a room with people you Idolise was truly special. I do have one client in particular who has the most beautiful long hair and is always happy to surrender her free time to let me try new things which is invaluable... thank you Zoe!

What’s your top tip for a Summer 2013 hair?

I think there are a few identifiable trends for this S/S13. Braids have been a big story and are still going strong. Volume was a key factor on many of the runway shows and what woman doesn’t love a little volume? I also think casual swept back ponytails are a hot look, for a timeless and glamorous look.

What’s your favourite Cloud Nine tool and why?

I think I would have to choose the Waving Wand. As a hairdresser it is easy to make hair look "done" but nowadays fashion dictates a far more relaxed and natural texture. The size of the Waving Wand makes achieving A-List waves and movement in minutes.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

For me social media is a really important tool, I follow my industry peers, make-up artists and stylists whose work is always inspiring to me. I think it is important to keep an eye on fashion week as this often dictates the looks that will be filtering down to the highstreet over the next six months, and by taking an element of a runway look you can create looks that are very fashion forward.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years I would love to have British Hairdressing Award under my belt. It would be an absolute dream come true! I would also love to have established myself on the session hairdressing scene. It’s the style of hair that I have always admired and would love to be recognised for.

What’s your best kept secret or favourite product?

Not so much a secret, as I believe in sharing as much information as possible, that’s the only way to continue to learn, however I firmly believe that maintaining the condition of your hair is the key to effortless styling. Healthy hair is responsive hair. My favourite product would be Sebastian Mousse Forte. Used wet or dry it enables lots of flexible body to be worked into the hair.

Which celeb would you love to style and why?

For someone who adores dressing hair I would have to choose someone with a healthy, thick head of hair, and the first person to spring to mind is Nicole Scherzinger. Her long layered hair is a stylist's dream and she doesn’t seem afraid to push the boundaries!
