Who are you?
Richard Phillipart, Salon owner & Creative Director of The Boutique Salon & Spa, Great Sutton, Cheshire. I started Hairdressing when I was just 13 as a Saturday boy in a local salon, progressing through my training and changing salons along the way. I opened up my own salon when I was just 22 and I now employ 14 staff, a number which is constantly growing and sometimes scares the hell out of me, ha!
Hairdressing takes me all over the world, I work on fashion shows in Paris, style celebrities for red carpet events in London and shoot campaigns for clothing companies in magazines.
Which hairstyle gives you the most buzz to create?
I love dressing hair, being able to take someone's hair and completely transform them with out cutting or colouring. It is an amazing skill to have and I find the Cloud Nine tools the best out there to do this with.
Do you have any memorable moment / client or event?
My last season at London Fashion Week. I worked on the Vivienne Westwood fashion show, this was just mental and something I have wanted to do since! Gosh, I can't even remember, it’s seriously a dream come true to work on this and have to thank L'Oreal Professional and Samantha Hilerby for that opportunity.
Lady Gaga wearing a Charle Le Mindu outfit which was made completely of human hair which I styled a few days earlier was crazy! I was working on his show at Paris Fashion Week and styled this dress and hat amongst others and straight after the show her stylist took clothes direct to Lady Gaga.A few days later she was all over the press wearing the outfit I styled! Having a world star wearing hair I did was crazy!
What’s your top tip for a Summer 2012 hair?
Texture texture and for good luck a little bit more texture. To get that unkempt dishevelled look try using the large Cloud Nine iron and rock them back and too on them selfs to give a soft beachy lived in look just like I did here for Michelle Keegan at the 2012 British Soap Awards. Spritz in some L’oreal Professional Beach fizz after styled to separate and scrunch.
What’s your favourite Cloud Nine tool and why?
I love the Wands, I keep swaying back and too as to which I love more the large or the micro wand.
They’re such a great bit of kit and enable you to create lots of different textures with one tool - tight curls, soft waves, root volume, scruff kinks.
It's endless what you can achieve and I keep coming up with new textures constantly.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Oh gosh wow, everywhere, it could be a film I watched or a place I've visited or even just from one of the assistants in the salon and how she has tied her hair back. Inspiration is all around you, I'm constantly ripping pages out of magazines and photographing things in the street.
I'm starting to get a little obsessed with the instragram app on my phone it's a great source of inspiration seeing what people in different parts of the world are loving and photographing.
Who are some of your celebrity clients?
I look after a few of the girls from Coronation Street for red carpet events, girls like Brooke Vincent and Michelle Keegan are regular clients of mine. Earlier this year I won the title of British Extensionist of the Year at the prestigious HAIR awards and since then I've been doing quite a lot of celebs extensions. I recently transformed Hollyoaks actress Stephanie Waring with new longer locks for her return to the soap.
What’s your best kept secret or favourite product?
I don't really have secrets, if I find something I think is fantastic or a new way of doing something I tell everybody about it!
My favourite product has to be L'Oreal Professional Pli, for preparing hair to styleNOTHING beats it, it gives the best foundation to any style and helps any texture you are creating last longer.
Which celeb would you love to style and why?
Someone I can never understand why she looks so awful in the hair department is Britney Spears.
I'm desperate to sort out her hair extensions, there's just no excuse for how bad that girl’s hair always looks.
