Hair Up Styles vs. Hair Down Styles

When it comes to deciding on a hairstyle, the first question on your mind is usually, up or down? Your choice can depend on many things, from the weather, the occasion, your outfit or simply what suits you best.

If you’re unsure whether to opt for a classic up style or leave your locks loose, there are plenty of things to take into consideration in order to get the desired look. Below are a selection of hair ideas to help you pick the perfect look.

Why go up?

An up do can be a smart choice for summer as it will help keep you cool as well as show off your summer style. The sky’s the limit when it comes to choice with plenty to choose from, such as the soft and sultry messy bun, the classic chignon with a side swept fringe or a wavy ponytail paired with a rolled fringe or braid. The French twist is always a popular choice for the red carpet if you’re going for a vintage finish, or modernise by adding some texture to your look.  It is important to blend the up-do with your chosen outfit, accessories such as necklaces and earrings combine with a lower neckline and can create a sophisticated yet comfortable look.

Why go down?

There is just as much choice when it comes to leaving your locks loose, from wavy tousled tresses to sleek and straight or bouncy curls with lots of volume, allowing your shiny hair to flow gently over your shoulders. Summer 2014 was dominated by beach wave mermaid locks that any Disney princess would be proud of – Top Tip: an easily achievable look to spice up your hair style by simply applying a mist of texturizing spray and scrunching.

As poker-straight hair makes its comeback, we’re sure to see this laidback look swapped for a sleeker, more sophisticated style.

The best of both worlds

Half up half down styles are everywhere right now and are particularly popular as they offer the softness of a loose hairdo, still allowing your hair to freely cascade around your face and over your shoulders, with the practicality and added edge of an up style. Take some inspiration from Freida Pinto’s take on the style by pulling back the top section of your hair adding some texture to your tips creating a flirty pouf.
