Who's Helen Woodland?
Helen Woodland is the Director of City Brides Hair & Makeup Ltd. She founded the company back in 2007 as she wanted to create a 5 star hair and makeup experience for brides and their bridal parties. Helen has built the business up and works from their studio in Edinburgh City Centre dealing with hundreds of luxury weddings every year & working closely her team and with each individual bride to find the perfect look for them.
What's City Brides concept?
By specialising in brides and bridal parties City Brides have built up a vast experience in their industry. We work closely with their brides and look at every wedding thoroughly, studying the dresses, wedding theme, flowers, venue etc when deciding on each bride’s style. We also look at hair length and texture to ensure that we create the perfect look for each individual whilst ensuring our focus is always on the customer and giving that exclusive personalised service.
Who's part of the team?
Helen Woodland - Company Director and Leading Hair and Makeup Artist.
Helen specialises in both Bridal Hair and Makeup. She specialises in elaborate updo’s and beautiful curls. Helen always ensures the team are fully up to date with the latest techniques and tips and is often heard saying “a good hairstyle is all about the prep work and the base” Her favourite tool is the Cloud Nine The O. Helen’s favourite part of the wedding day is always when dad walks in and see’s the bride in her dress..."It never fails to bring a tear to my eye! That moment when their eyes meet and they both well up, no matter how many times you see it, to be part of that special time is priceless”
Nicola Robbins - Senior Hairstylist
Nicola is a long established member of the team and an expert with an updo. Nicola loves building close relationships with each of her clients learning their likes and dislikes to create the best possible version of them for their wedding day.
Nicola’s favourite part of her job is when the bride looks in the mirror. “When a bride looks in the mirror for the first time and sees how incredible they look always gives me goosebumps. I also love the bond we have with all our clients, which makes the morning really fun, relaxed and special”
Karen - Pro Makeup Artist & Hair Stylist
Karen works closely with brides and bridal parties to create that perfect hair and makeup look. Karen loves curls and is rarely seen without a styling wand in her hand! Karen’s favourite part of the job is meeting all the different people and seeing how happy and confident the client is at the end!
Emma - Pro Makeup Artist & Senior Hairstylist
Emma is a leading makeup artist and senior hair stylist who works with the team on a freelance basis. She specialises in creating vintage styles and is an expert at the 60s Beehive! Emma’s favourite part of the job is the transformation. From arriving to a bride in her PJs with no hair or makeup on and leaving with her in her dress and looking the best they could be….just fabulous.
Gemma - Hairstylist
Gemma specialises in prepping all the hair for the senior stylists. She works with different techniques and loves using The ‘O’ to give clients hair that extra lift. Gemma’s favourite part of the job is working with the team and meeting all the new clients. Gemma is also a fan of seeing all the different venues!
“I’m getting married next year, how do I find the right person to do my hair and make-up?”
Shop around! Get on Instagram, facebook, twitter. Many established firms will be keen to show off their work on a regular basis so look at local hashtags i.e. #edinburghweddinghair. Have a browse through websites and look at portfolios. (Always ensure the portfolio features actual weddings from the hairdresser’s own work…) make sure the portfolio is current and up to date.
Look at the hairdresser’s style. Is it a sleek style you want.. Do their have any in their portfolio or are their pictures all tousled messy hairdos. Ensure you select a hairdresser who does a style you want for your big day.
Have a chat with them. Phone them and ask how things work on the big day. Explain about your hair type/texture. Do they think your style is achievable and would you need to get clip in extensions/padding etc? A good hairdresser should be able to help you with this.
What’s hot in bridal hair this year?
Bridal hair in 2016 is still quite soft and relaxed. Lots of low updos, curls and fresh flowers.
The hair is meant to be a woman’s crown – how important is it to get the hair right on the big day?
Our saying to our brides is that we want you to feel the best possible version of you. People sometimes worry about spending money on their hair yet its in every single picture so if it went wrong its hard to avoid. Have a trial beforehand so that look is 100% perfect. You also want your style to last and look as good for the evening guests as it did when you walked up the aisle.
Any available appointments for this year?
Sorry not at the weekend!! We do still have the odd mid week date left at the end of the year but other than that we are working our little socks off. We generally book our weekend slots up at least 1-2 years ahead. Next year is filling up as well as 2018 and 2019. Its never too early to book! The number of last minute enquiries we get from brides that we have to turn away never fails to surprise us, do your research and get that hairdresser booked so then you can just sit back and relax!
