Initiated in Dever, Colordo RAOK Day was launched by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation. The event caught on in New Zeland nine years later where it became more widespread. Falling on the 17th of February it is a day to celebrate and encourage kindness and a pay it forward mentality with the aim of creating a domino effect.

The aim of the day is to encourage the domino effect of kindness. By showing kindness to someone it will therefore encourage the spread of kindness to others. Physiologically, kindness can positively change your brain. Being kind boosts serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters in the brain that give you feelings of satisfaction and well-being, and cause the pleasure/reward centers in your brain to light up.

Being kind doesn't just extend to others, it is equally improtant to do this for yourself - because if you can't be kind to yourself, how can you show kindness to others? Catching any negative internal self talk and instead turning this into kind self talk and gratitude will make a huge difference. If you start your day with negative self talk this will most likely mean your day will continue that way, however if you can turn it around with the things you are grateful for and some kind words that you like about yourself or some empowering affirmations it is very interesting to see how much of an impact this can make - give it a try!

Journalling is a great way to set yourself up for the day and to incorporate kindness. Set some intentions in the morning as part of your routine and being actively aware that you would like to show kindness to yourself and others this will make it much more likely that you will achieve it. It can be a simple as offering a smile to a stranger or complimenting someone on their outfit - you have no idea how much that will brighten their day, or how it will make you feel.
